Alex and Shane played in the sandbox together when they were little. They also knew an Asian fellow named Tim who knew how to rock the keyboards. Then they played music together for some time after high school many years later, but nothing ever seemed to explode.
One day Shane got mad during dinner and slammed his fork down and exclaimed, "Damnit I want to be in a real band!" Then Shane got in the car with his electric guitar and headed into town to an open blues jam.
Recently imported from upstate New York, Brandon stood very close to the doorway of the Blue Martini and listened to strangers jamming. Shane walked in and brushed by Brandon on the way in the door. An hour later, Brandon and Shane found themselves on stage playing a funky rendition of Phish's "Possum," with a random assortment of talented musicians.
A few rockin' tunes later, Shane asked Brandon if he wanted to be in a band. Brandon said "OK" and the next day Alex, Shane, and Brandon had the first Cougar Magnum moment. The following day, bassist Philip Barr came over.
They rocked with Phil for many months until Phil was forced to relocate. They went through a few guest bass players over a period of 9 months and finally discovered John Federal, a funky bearded guy with a writing degree from NC State.
And there you have it. The opening chapter of the abridged Cougar Magnum biography. ---------------------------------- Now it is time for rock talk: "...A combination of musical style and genuine substance." Taking root in the capital of North Carolina, they began their rock journey in September 2006 and have melted faces ever since. Cougar Magnum blends blues, jazz, alternative rock, and funk to create 'MODERN JAM'.
